UKB Chair, Inspiration & Collaboration
We are pleased to announce the UKB Chair, coming soon!
An old art school friend, Jennifer and Joshua have worked together before as designer and woodworker. But the creative exchange was especially sparked when we had the opportunity to travel to Japan together last spring.
As a Tokyo native, Jennifer was guide and translator for a once in a lifetime trip for us, as Base 10 got to experience our first visit to the country that has inspired so much of our work and craft.
For Jennifer this trip was also an inspiring new view of traditional Japanese joinery, hand planing, and other techniques through master craftsman studio visits we did together, informed by Joshua’s experience and point of view as a maker. Throughout the trip, the seeds of collaboration were planted.
One year after our travel, we are still inspired as we debut the UKB Chair!
Joshua says that the chair is the most challenging piece of furniture he has yet built, and Jennifer’s response was “Good, then I did my job right.”
The geometry of the chair is so unforgiving that only the most precise craftsmanship could bring it to life. Up close, the design is a showcase of what is uniquely possible with hand joinery. At a distance, the minimalist presence finds a natural place in contemporary life.
